In the beginning of Art 4 I remember that I was nervous to be in a class full of incredibly artistic and talented individuals because I didn't feel that I could work at their level. I felt too inexperienced and was afraid that others would judge me or harshly critique my pieces. However I was pleasantly surprised by the positive atmosphere of the classroom; all the students were extremely friendly and supportive of each other.
Once I began to open myself up to others I was able to truly enjoy the class. I knew that I had a lot to improve on but being able to do projects with prisma, oil paint, and chalk pastels helped give me the practice that I needed. I soon learned different techniques to use with different mediums. For example, upon receiving advice from Ms. Rossi I learned how properly layer prismas by increasing pressure on the paper. I also learned to use toothed paper (the prismas adheres better to a rough surface) and that applying too much pressure to the toothed paper creates a more glossy look, making it also harder to layer on more colors. Using oil paint, I was taught to use either a thin layer of acrylic paint or gesso to prep my canvas so that the colors in my piece stand out. I also learned how to use a palette knife, although I was not a fan with having less control in my ability to blend colors. Lastly I discovered how to use chalk pastels. This was my favorite medium to use because it was my most successful medium. Chalk pastels made me feel excited to create art again because it gave me the confidence that I had originally lacked. Now even as my Art 4 class ends, I want to continue to create pieces on my own.
In conclusion, Art 4 was difficult but I would never trade the experience for anything. Through this class I made very strong friendships, learned about myself as an artist, and improved myself and my art. The friendships I made taught me that both positive and negative feedback on a piece are both critical and helped me develop more self- confidence, which is something that I lacked for so long. I know that every single one of my peers will accomplish so much with their talents and I would honestly not be surprised if any of them become a famous painter, designer, or illustrator. I expect each and every one of them to continue to be their beyond incredible self and I wish I could be there t. Thanks for being such a great teacher Ms. Rossi and for always being patient and supportive!
