When I first was brainstorming what I should create for my reflexive piece, I knew I wanted to create something personal- something that not only reflected other objects but also reflected my personality. That’s why I chose my snow globes and my Christmas lights. These objects represent two things that make me happy: Disney and Christmas. Disney represents my happiness because some of my happiest moments with my family occurred at Disney world, where everything seemed possible and I could truly act like a kid. While Christmas represents another aspect of my happiness because it’s a time when all my family is together.
By the time I finally got to sketch my ideas I had to decide between the snow globes and a telescope. Because I sketched and photographed different angels of the two ideas, I was able to compare different angels and make my final decision. What made me choose the snow globes was not only my strong personal connection but also because I liked how the lights shined and casted glares.
While creating this piece, I was met with many challenges. Although I am in Art 4, I didn’t feel confident in my knowledge of prismas. I felt there were many techniques I needed to learn and not enough time to learn them all. I also struggled with drawing the snow globes because the ones in the background are blurry and they require so much detail. However, I do feel that I was successful in creating the Christmas lights, because they were fun to create and allowed me to use brighter colors.
In the end, I hadn’t finished on time but I did feel that I grew through this project. It allowed me to practice a medium that I was behind in and it helped me learn my style of prisma drawings. I feel that in order to improve, I have to take my time and layer more. I also feel that I should combine more colors to add more variety and contrast. Once I walked around the classroom and saw my peer’s pieces, I became inspired to someday be at their level of skill. Now I want to practice on my own so I can be better.
