Art throughout history has been used to tell stories and address issues. However, the overall purpose for a work of art is dependent upon the ideas/beliefs of an individual artist. As a creator, I find that my art reflects my mood or a personal memory. I do this in the hopes that I can capture a feeling, one that is meaningful to me, and connect it to the emotions of my viewers. In other words, my goal is to have my viewers connect to me through understanding each other’s emotions. By doing this, I hope my viewers can feel excited by the fact that they are not alone, there are people out there who think and feel just as they do. Portraying emotions leaves an artist vulnerable, but I want people to know its okay to be vulnerable. Hopefully by allowing myself to be honest in my feelings, my viewers can stop being afraid to share their own.
Although the representation of emotions is a serious aspect of art, I don’t want to be seen as a serious artist. I want people to view me as an artist who creates purely because it’s fun and relaxing. To reiterate, I never want art to feel like a stressful job or like an irritating chore. By avoiding the appearance of being a serious artist, I am able to create without the worry of deadlines or the judgment of others. I can continue to feel the same joy I felt as a kid when I’d color outside the lines in a coloring book or make a snowman out of play dough. It also allows me to create without limitations because I don’t have to meet the expectations of others or impress a buyer.
What makes art continue to be fun for me isn’t only being able to avoid being a serious artist but also being able to constantly discover new mediums. Art can take form in almost everything we do and can be created in thousands of ways. This excites and drives me because I know that there is always a new medium to try. Recently, space photography has peaked my interest. The idea of taking pictures of places far away completely entices me. Since I don’t have to be devoted to one medium, I am able to explore that interest and see if it is something I am truly passionate about. The unknown also is a theme I find interests me as well because it allows more room for imagination. By ‘unknown’ I mean things that mankind doesn’t fully understand such as the psyche, interstellar space, and the challenger deep.
Another thing that motivates the creation of art is the meaning behind it. Even though I have already mentioned that the meaning behind my art is based off of emotions, I believe that not all art requires symbolism or meaning. Somebody could sketch a flower because they think flowers are pretty and it’s still considered art. That being said, I personally feel that my own art should always have a purpose or story behind it because I enjoy hearing how people reflect on my art. I like knowing that my art had an affect on someone.
In conclusion, I believe that art can be created with anything, for anything, and by anything. What separates all art with ‘good art’ isn’t the meaning or the medium but it is the creativity of an artist and the uniqueness of a piece. Art can be made for any reason but ‘good art’ stands out because it isn’t like other art works. In a world of 8 billion potential artists, its’ hard to develop an original idea, but ‘good artists’ are able to gain the attention of others even in this crowd of 8 billion because they make works that make them different from everyone else. I hope to one day be an artist that creates art that is considered 'good art' to everybody, but until then I will create art that is 'good art' to me.
