When reflecting on this piece, I struggle to remember why I decided to create it to reflect the concept of 'nature and mechanical'. To me nature and mechanisms don't mix. When mankind's devices interrupt nature's flow there tends to be a negative reaction, aka pollution. I attempted to incorporate this into my brainstorming process and developed the idea of farm animals sinking in a tar pit. However, I needed to add more to the piece. To further portray the idea of pollution I decided to make that tar pit in a landfill and I changed the farm animals to a single cybernetic elephant (simply because I like elephants and it needed to be mechanical). This image did not reflect any meaning in particular, however I did hope that each viewer would find their own meaning when seeing it.
While creating this piece I had a difficult time imagining a robotic elephant. Before this project, I had only created artworks based off of a picture I originally had. However, in this case I had to imagine everything because I had no reference photo. To solve this I had to look up pictures online of robots and combine different part of robots so that my elephant robot looked like it could function if it was real. I also struggled with making piles of trash, which doesn't have any distinguishable shapes or objects since its far off in the background. To achieve this I combined basic colors, black, white, brown, blue, and green, in random order and scattered them to form a small hill. Due to having a red background, if I didn't fill in all the empty space within the mounds of trash the pile would still appear cohesive.
I believe that I was successful when creating the background, the closest pile of dirt, and the fuel source on the elephant. The background was successful because I feel that the tranquil appearance of the sky balances with the dramatic and harsh reality of the robotic elephant's future. That way the viewer doesn't feel nervous or uneasy, but rather intrigued and hopeful. I also felt successful in creating the closest pile of dirt because I was able to put independent pieces of trash on the pile, which showed that the elephant was in a landfill and explained what the colorful hills in the background were. Lastly I feel that I succeeded in making the elephant appear realistic and function-able with the inclusion of the fuel source on his side. This was a last minute idea and I feel that it completes the robot because it adds detail to what would have been a barren piece of metal.
This piece was my final art piece in AP Art and I feel that it reflects what I have learned so far with oil paints. Not only does it show that I know now how to blend, add shadows, and apply tiny details, but it also shows that I have gotten better in my ability to create art without a reference. It allows me to explore my more creative and imaginative side, which was fun because I didn't have to follow any rules other than my own.
