When it comes to challenges i had to overcome with this piece, i don't know where to start. My piece constantly fell apart. The sides wouldn't stick together, when certain pieces would dry they would crack and break in half, the corners were too rough and bumpy, it was extremely difficult to stay patient with this piece. The only thing i can think of that was successful was that the weaving of the clay looks smooth and even. In the future when i deal with clay, i plan on making sure my pieces stay stuck together before i try adding new parts to it. My piece is a vessel because it is a functioning box and can hold items in it.
I found that the mold process was significantly easier than actually having to create the piece. Since we were using baby doll parts as molds, it was interesting to say the least. My piece had been successful till i squashed it in my backpack. It hadn't had any cracks and did look like a baby head.
First i flattened out the clay into a thin sheet and then rolled it around a pvc pipe. then i cut around the pipe so the clay cut resemble its shape. After letting it dry for a little bit, i connected the bottom and then folded the ends so it had more of a shape. To prep it for the fire, i filled it with burnable things such as leaves. This style, however, is not something that i am too drawn too. The outcome is usually unpredictable and i prefer being able to control how my piece looks.
For my relief project i decided to use quilling and make a parrot out of these swirly pieces of paper. I found that this piece was successful; however, there were many things i would change. One of those things would be how i spun the pieces of paper. Next time i would rather use a tool than my hands because with my hands it came out more sloppy and rolling up the paper became i really annoying/ tedious job. I also would change using normal elmers glue rather than the hot glue gun. The first time i used a glue bottle, it exploded on me and after that it was always messy. I had wanted to make a parrot because i really love birds and parrots are one of the most beautiful types of birds since they are full of so many colors. Yet, i wanted to do quilling in the first place because of the pinterest quilling you showed us in class.
The artist I have chosen for today is a man named Christopher Jobson. He started his work on Colossal back in 2010 and managed to be one of the fifty top blogs on there. Each week he posts about fifteen new incredible creations that vary from being paintings, installations, animations, buildings, pieces of street art, and more. In this picture I have one of his most recent works that involves clay yet he works with various types of materials. Although he is an artist, he also is a father and husband. He lives with his wife, Maggie, and his son, Caleb, in Chicago. Christopher Jobson inspires me by all the hard work he does. He works all the time and comes up with very creative and unique things each day. His ideas are endless. Yet its also inspiring to me that he manages to work so hard and put so much effort into his pieces but still has time to be a loving husband and father. Not only that but his artwork manages to draw me in. For example, this piece drew me in because of how much detail he put into it. The people and items look very realistic even though they are small. I love working with clay and i hope that one day i can make pieces that are as details as his.
